Monday of Passion week is a very interesting day to me. We see Jesus doing two seemingly “harsh” things. One, he cleansed the Temple. Two, he cursed the fig tree.
What’s the Gospel message here?
In the Temple Jesus is clear about the issue – it’s supposed to be a place centered on relationship. Jesus says this is supposed to be a house of prayer. Prayer is communication, and communication is foundational to every healthy relationship.
We can see this relational focus in the very next verse (Matthew 21:14) – “And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them.”
Jesus will explain the fig tree to the disciples tomorrow.
One other thing we see on this day is found in John 12, where Jesus talks about the Son of Man being lifted up.
“”Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have come to this hour.
And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.””
~ John 12:27, 32
Today’s Good News is Jesus is all about relationships. He knew His purpose was to come, to die, and to be raised again to restore the most important relationship we can have – the one between us and our Heavenly Father. And that’s Good News!
