I remember reading Paul ‘s letter to the Galatians and realizing this next Gospel Game Changer –
God’s not keeping score.
Paul writes:
“Yet we know that a person is made right with God by faith in Jesus Christ, not by obeying the law. And we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we might be made right with God because of our faith in Christ, not because we have obeyed the law. For no one will ever be made right with God by obeying the law.”
For when I tried to keep the law, it condemned me. So I died to the law—I stopped trying to meet all its requirements—so that I might live for God.
I do not treat the grace of God as meaningless. For if keeping the law could make us right with God, then there was no need for Christ to die.” (Galatians 2:16, 19, 21 NLT)
The Law was about rules and regs. If we attempt to approach God in this way, we will live as if God is the great cosmic scorekeeper. But how will we know if we’ve scored enough points to “win”? We won’t.
This is why if we just allow 1% Law to creep into our thinking or teaching we open the door for the enemy to ask one debilitating question, “Have you done enough?” There’s no peace in this way of living. There’s no Good News there.
Today’s Good News is that Jesus didn’t just fulfill some of the Law and expects us to achieve the rest. Nor are we to “do as much as we can” and Jesus will make up the difference. It’s neither of these things. The truth is Jesus has accomplished everything required to fulfill the Law – it is finished!
It’s all grace, no Law. The work is completed by Jesus, and we recieve the benefit. As Paul clearly wrote, we are made right purely by our belief in Jesus – and that’s Good News!
