I’m a “thinker,” so I love apologetics (simplistic definition – defending/explaining beliefs with logical analysis). I can have these types of conversations all day long. There is a danger in this in that we can attempt to remove some of the mystery of God with explanations that may be more inferred then provided by Scripture.
God is clear that His ways are not our ways and His thoughts are not our thoughts. How could they be? He’s God and we’re not. Besides, would anyone really follow a “God” they could completely understand and explain?
Of course, God does not ask us to check our brains at the door, and He invites us to explore who He is and the pieces we can understand. He invites our challenging thoughts and there often are explanations we can understand. So, there’s balance.
The Gospel Game Changer today is –
My role is not to convince people to believe – it’s to get them to “bump into Jesus” and let Him do what only He can do – transform hearts.
The reason this has helped me is it relieves me of thinking I have to have every answer to every question. I don’t. It also reminds me that it’s not up to me to solve every dilemma everyone has with following Jesus. Jesus is perfectly capable of revealing truth to those who really want to find the answers. He is the Author and Finisher of our faith – which means He is the One who gives and sustains our faith.
I just finished reading Russell Moore’s Onward where he writes, “We speak with kindness and persuasion, not because we’re weak but because the gospel is strong. We speak the truth, with conviction and with gentleness, as those who have nothing to prove.” I love that thought and I especially like the end – as those who have nothing to prove. That’s Jesus’s role.
So, go make friends. Enjoy their company. Enjoy community without feeling the pressure to get everyone to believe exactly what you believe right when you believe it. Just remember all you really need to do is help people “bump into Jesus” – He’ll take it from there – and that’s really Good News.
