“I have a dream.” – Martin Luther King, Jr. (August 28, 1963)
In reading MLK’s complete speech again, I am reminded of how powerful and truthful his words were and still are today – nearly 53 years later. I’m deeply saddened how much race is still an issue in this country and in our world – we still have a long way to go.
Instead of recognizing our differences as strengths, we often see them as dividers. Instead of bringing out the best in each other, we seem to, too often, bring out the worst.
It’s another symptom of the Fall – man’s choice to do it our way instead of God’s. And like any sickness, if all we do is treat symptoms, we’ll never see true healing.
Today, I have a prayer.
I pray that we would first see the brokenness within ourselves, before even thinking about someone else’s shortcomings.
I pray we would first see the image of God within those around us before we would notice anything else about them.
I pray that we would look for ways to love our brothers and sisters, and look for ways to build them up and not tear them down.
I pray that our children will see us loving, not hating. That prejudice in any form would end with our generation.
I pray that the “ministry of reconciliation” that our Lord has commissioned us with would be a daily part of our lives.
I pray that the Good News of the Gospel would transform our lives and all of our relationships.
Lord, let it begin with me.
