I’m not a fan of the dying process (I’m not sure anyone is). The older I get the more I experience watching people I grew up admiring go through it. I hate it.
It’s sin’s last attempt to win.
I lost (temporarily) another person I admire deeply last week.
I don’t want to delve too deeply here, but suffice it to say, our Enemy wants to see us suffer and die.
Our physical death, however, can be Good News. I know, it doesn’t feel right to even say such a thing, but it’s true. The Apostle Paul described our current bodies as tents – non-permanent dwelling places. And while they are certainly a part of who we are, they are not all that we are.
When the Bible says we’re made in the image of God, it’s not talking about our physical bodies (or we’d all look identical). It’s talking about the fact the we have souls and spirits and these are just as much a part of who we are as the physical body – maybe more so.
But we also don’t just become spirits floating around forever after we die. The Apostle Paul also reveals that we will be given new bodies – imperishable bodies, free from the ravages of sin, disease, and death.
Today’s Good News is that this world nor this body is our permanent nor only home. Better things await us – a new earth and a new body. For this I am thankful, and I look forward with great anticipation to the day when we can dwell together free from the burden of our own rebellion and its consequences.
Until that day, we enjoy and look for glimpses of that wonderful future. We look for “peaks” into that perfect world. We cannot see it clearly from here, but it’s there. And we get a glimpse of it when we allow God to love us and then watch His love flow through us to those around us.
“Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” We have the privilege of bringing glimpses of what’s to come as we love the people around us – and that’s Good News!
