I am reminded that a great focus for a New Year is not on what I resolve to do for God, but to recognize what God has resolved to do for me. And unlike my failure to maintain my resolutions, God is always perfectly faithful.
Thank you, Jesus, for giving me a new beginning (new birth) that transforms everything about me from slave to son, from death to life. Thank You that the life You’ve given is not depend on my faithfulness, but is rooted and maintained in Your faithfulness.
Today’s Good News is we can recieve the ultimate “fresh start” and the point is not “Do it better this time!” Oh no, the Gospel is so much better! The Gospel points us to the truth that Jesus has done perfectly what we are incapable of doing ourselves – our multiple failed New Year’s resolutions are the proof of our inability to get it right for very long.
Jesus fulfilled every demand of God’s requirements (the Law) on our behalf, so that we can live in the freedom of God’s love, mercy, and grace. Our “fresh start” with God is secured by Jesus’ ability to get it right, not ours.
Now that’s the way to start off the New Year!
