We’ve already seen that Jesus’ declaration “It is finished” covers two major promises of God. Today, we’ll see that “It is finished” also meant that the requirements of the entire Old Covenant Law have been fulfilled (Matthew 5:17).
There are multiple places in the New Testament that teach the purpose of the Law was to reveal God’s perfect standard and to make us see we have not (and cannot) live up to it. It is also intended to point us to the One who has fulfilled the Law perfectly on our behalf – Jesus.
Along with the Law came the entire sacrificial system. A way to temporarily atone for one’s falling short of God’s standard. What we see in Jesus’ life and death is the ultimate and final sacrafice. The writer of Hebrews states that after Christ had made the final sacrafice, He “sat down at the right hand of the Father” (Hebrews 10:12). He sat down because the work was finished. He had completed the task of making a “once for all” and “once for all time” atoning sacrafice – full satisfying the Old Covenant Law.
Today’s Good News is God is NOT looking to you to atone for (sacrafice for) all the times you’ve fallen short of His standard. He’s not calling you to the altar and requiring more sacrafice from you. Instead, He invites you to the table (read more on this here).
Hebrews 10:18 says, “And when sins have been forgiven, there is no need to offer any more sacrifices.” By believing in Jesus, your sins are forgiven, the Law is fulfilled through Jesus – it is finished – and that’s really Good News!
