We are taking a look at what was finished when Jesus declared from the cross “It is finished!”
We can go all the way back to the Garden of Eden to recognize one of the things that has been finished. When man rebelled, for the very first time, we see shame immediately enter what had been a completely shame-free existence. The end of Genesis chapter two makes a specific reference to the fact that prior to the rebellion, “the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.”
Genesis chapter three begins with Adam and Eve choosing to rebel against God, and the immediate result is seen in verse 10 when Adam hid himself from God – “And [Adam] said, “I heard the sound of you [God] in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” Shame entered perfection and life is perfect no more.
As a result, God curses the serpent (Satan) and says, “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” ~ Genesis 3:15 A quick side note – there are consequences to Adam and Eve, but God does NOT curse them – He only curses the serpent.
The word translated “bruise” can also be translated “crush”. This is a promise God made to Satan – that Eve’s offspring (Jesus) would crush his head. John 10:10 reveals the truth that Satan wants to steal, kill, and destroy, but Jesus has come to bring us life.
This is one of the things included in Jesus’ declaration on the cross. God’s promise to crush Satan’s head is being fulfilled. Satan’s attempt to scare us with death is being destroyed. Death is being conquered. Now we can read and understand this:
“’Death is swallowed up in victory.’ ‘O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?’ The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” ~ 1 Corinthians 15:54-57
Today’s Good News is the death sentence Satan attempted to put us under has been reversed. Instead of death, we recieve life. Not based on anything we do, but based purely on the finished work of Jesus Christ.
I love my life here on earth, yet I cannot wait to experience the eternal life that I can only glimpse from here. A life in an imperishable body. A life that is in no way tainted by my sin and rebellion. A life without end, spent in the very presence of my Savior. Yes, the work required to crush Satan’s head and give us victory over death is complete – it is finished – and that’s really Good News!
