January 28 – Everyday Gospel – Experience It

Can you describe what it feels like to fall in love?

It’s difficult to do, isn’t it? There are some things in life we just have to experience it.

The same is true for winning a championship or earning your degree or any number of other “wins” in life. I find it a little humorous when they interview an athlete after making the winning play, or being named Most Valuable Player – they always ask, so how does it feel? The response is always some form of “It’s great but I really don’t know how to describe it.” You just have to experience it.

The Good News of God’s grace is this way. I struggle to find strong enough words to describe it. I know what it is to win a championship (at least on a small level), I know what it feels like to be in love – but explaining it to someone else is…well…hard. Not because I don’t want you to know how it feels, it’s just that to truly know you have to experience it.

I wish I had a better way to say this, but I don’t. If you want to feel the enormity of God’s love for you, if you want to experience the true freedom of God’s mercy and grace, you have to lean into it. You have to “lose yourself” in the fact that to really know you’ll have to take a step of faith towards it.

This is not to say that you check your brain at the door. I didn’t do that when I won or feel in love with my wife. No, you still have to think through things, and make decisions, and use your brain. But there is a faith element in all these things.

When a champion tells you, they can’t explain it you just have to experience it, they’re not lying to you nor trying to deceive you. They’re being honest.

The same is true with experiencing the love of Jesus in your life.

I will say this, I know when I’m in love, and it may not happen in an instant – in fact, it usually happens over time. But you wake up one morning and realize you’re in love. It’s the same with your relationship with God through Jesus. If you allow yourself some freedom to love and be loved, you’ll wake up one day and realize you are experiencing the love of Christ in your life – you’ll realize you’re a Believer.

Having experienced this for myself, I would love for everyone to know what this is like – it’s life-changing. More than that – it’s life-transforming. You may not ever know what it feels like to play basketball like MJ or throw Super Bowl winning touchdowns or win a Grammy, but you can experience something far more valuable – you can discover that you’re the hidden treasure God is willing to give everything to have (more on that tomorrow).

You can experience the love of God in your life – and that’s really Good News!
