January 25 – Everyday Gospel – Life

Is life fragile or eternal?

It seems every day there’s news of another celebrity passing away. I’ve already attended two memorial services and have had several friends’ family members pass away just since New Years.

It’s clear life is fragile.

However, that news alone isn’t really Good News. What is Good News, is while life is fragile, it’s also eternal. Clearly, I do not shy away from spiritual issues, in fact, it’s because of my convictions that I write about these things often. Sadly, spiritual issues often come across as divisive – I certainly hope that’s not the case with me. I share often, because I really do believe it’s Good News.

Today is no different, God’s desire for us is to spend this life and the life to come with Him. He’s not mad at you. He’s not out to get you. He’s not out to ruin your life or spoil the party. In fact, His desire is to bring real life. Jesus was often the life of the party. “Sinners” wanted Him around and wanted to hang out with Him. Therefore, if the Jesus you’ve been “sold” doesn’t sound like this, maybe you need to check your sources.

Here are a few things you should know about Jesus:

Jesus said, “The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the LORD’s favor has come. ” Luke‬ ‭4:18-19‬

“God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.”
‭‭John‬ ‭3:17‬

“Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.’” Matthew‬ ‭11:28-30‬
‬‬
Jesus said, “The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.” ‭John‬ ‭10:10‬
‬‬
To the woman caught in the act of adultery…
“Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, ‘Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?’ ‘No, Lord,’ she said. And Jesus said, ‘Neither do I. Go and sin no more.’” John‬ ‭8:10-11‬

To all who believe…
“So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus.” ‭Romans‬ ‭8:1‬‬‬

Now that’s what I call Good News!
